A driveway in Surprise carries more than cars. It takes 160° surface temperatures in July, monsoon sheet-flow in August, and the slow push of clay swelling over caliche every time it rains. The original builder-grade driveways in Marley Park, Surprise Farms and Sierra Montana were 3½ inches thick on a lightly scraped lot, and most of them are showing it now: corner cracks, a heaved panel at the garage apron, spalling where the sprinklers overspray.
We build them differently. Every driveway starts with the base: we cut out the old slab, rip shallow caliche, moisture-condition the subgrade and compact a 4-inch ABC base. The slab itself is 4 inches of 4,000-psi mix with #3 rebar on 24-inch centers for standard driveways, or 6 inches with #4 rebar where you'll park an RV, boat or work truck. Control joints are sawed at 10-foot spacing so the slab cracks where we decided, not where it wants to. In summer we're pouring by 5:30 AM and the slab gets a curing compound before the sun is high.
Widening an existing driveway? We dowel the new section into the old one so the two don't separate, match the finish, and handle the City of Surprise right-of-way permit for the new curb cut and approach.

Questions we get about driveways
How thick should a driveway be in Arizona?
Four inches is the standard for cars and SUVs. Go to six inches with #4 rebar if you'll park an RV, a boat trailer or a loaded three-quarter-ton truck. Thickness matters less than what's under it: a 4-inch slab on a compacted base outlasts a 6-inch slab on raw clay.
Why do so many Surprise driveways crack at the corners?
Corner cracks and heaved panels almost always trace back to expansive clay sitting on caliche. The caliche stops drainage, the clay above it swells when it rains and shrinks when it dries, and the slab rides up and down until it breaks. Base prep is the fix, which is why we don't skip it.
Can you pour in July?
Yes, with the right method. We pour at first light when the air is 80° instead of 105°, use a hot-weather mix with retarder, fog the base, apply evaporation retarder while finishing, and cure the same morning. What we won't do is pour a driveway at 2 PM in July — that's how you get surface crazing and a weak slab.
How long does a driveway replacement take?
Two working days on site for most homes: demolition and base on day one, forming and pouring on day two. You can walk on it the next day, park a car after seven days, and it's fully cured at 28 days. We'll tell you exactly when you can drive on it before we leave.
Do I need HOA approval to widen my driveway?
In most Surprise subdivisions, yes — driveway width and ribbon extensions are covered by the architectural guidelines. We give you the drawing, material and color spec the committee asks for. Budget two to four weeks for approval before we start.
