Backyards in Surprise come with three things: a block wall, a small builder patio, and a lot of gravel. Most of the slabs we pour are patio extensions — taking a 10-by-12 pad out to the full width of the house so there's room for a table, a grill and a ramada — and the footings-plus-slab for a covered patio or pergola.
The detail that matters here is drainage. Monsoon storms drop an inch of rain in an hour, and a patio that slopes toward the house sends that water straight at the stem wall and under the stucco. We set every patio at a quarter-inch per foot away from the house, tie into the yard's existing drainage or cut a swale, and isolate the slab from the foundation so the two can move independently.
Shed slabs, garage and workshop slabs and RV pads get the same base prep as a driveway. For RV pads through a side-yard gate we check the gate width, the utility easement and your HOA's rules on where a rig can be parked before we quote, because those three things decide whether the job is possible.

Concrete patio ideas for Surprise backyards
The patios that work best here solve for shade and heat, not just square footage. A few layouts we build over and over: a full-width extension along the back of the house with footings ready for an alumawood cover; an L-shaped patio that wraps the corner where the block walls meet, which is naturally the shadiest spot in a west-facing yard; a separate pad set away from the house for a fire pit or a spa; and a poured walkway that connects patio, side gate and pool so nobody cuts across gravel. Does a patio need a permit in Surprise?
A ground-level slab with no roof generally does not. A covered patio over 200 square feet, or any structure with footings, does — and the plan review takes about two weeks. We tell you which category your project falls in at the estimate.
Can you match the existing patio?
Usually. We dowel the new slab into the old one, match thickness and finish, and saw a joint at the seam so it reads as intentional. If the old patio is heaved or cracked we'll recommend replacing the whole thing so you don't have a new slab next to a failing one.
How big a slab does a shed need?
Pour the slab 6 inches larger than the shed on every side and thicken the edge to 8 inches where the walls sit. Most prefab sheds are fine on 4 inches; a workshop with a lift or heavy tools should be 5 or 6.
Will an RV pad work with my HOA?
Many Surprise HOAs allow RV parking behind the front setback and out of street view, some allow it only with screening, and a few prohibit it. We'll check your CC&Rs before quoting so you don't pour a pad you can't use.
