Cost
Broom-finished concrete: $8–$12 per square foot installed. Colored or exposed-aggregate concrete: $11–$15. Stamped concrete: $14–$22. Concrete pavers over a compacted base: $16–$26 installed; travertine and natural stone: $22–$35. On a 600-square-foot driveway that's roughly $6,000 for concrete, $11,000 stamped, and $13,000 for pavers.
Heat underfoot
In a Surprise July, bare gray concrete reaches 150 degrees at the surface; light-colored pavers and travertine run 15 to 30 degrees cooler; a textured cool-deck coating on concrete gets the same benefit for $4 to $7 per square foot. Around a pool, this matters more than anything else on the list.
Cracking and settling
Concrete cracks at its joints and, on bad base, across its panels; the repair is leveling or replacement. Pavers don't crack — they settle, and a sunk section can be lifted, the base fixed and the pavers reset. On the clay pockets and uncompacted fill common in Surprise, that repairability is real value. On a well-prepared base, both last 30 years.
Weeds, ants and sand
Paver joints grow weeds, harbor ants and lose their sand; polymeric sand and a yearly sweep manage it but never eliminate it. Concrete has neither problem. This is the maintenance difference, and it's the reason a lot of Arizona homeowners choose stamped concrete for the look of pavers without the joints.
HOAs and resale
Most Surprise HOAs allow both with a submittal; some restrict driveway extensions to matching concrete; Verrado and a few others specify approved paver styles. Pavers and travertine read as a premium finish and return a large share of their cost at resale in the higher-end neighborhoods; in a builder subdivision, a clean concrete driveway is what buyers expect.
Our recommendation
Concrete for driveways, RV pads and anything that carries weight — smoother, cheaper, and six-inch reinforced concrete under a motorhome is the right answer. Pavers or travertine around a pool or on a patio when the budget allows and the look matters, especially in the older custom neighborhoods. Stamped or cool-deck concrete when you want the look and the cooler surface without the joints.
Common questions
Which is cooler around a pool?
Travertine and light pavers are the coolest; cool-deck-coated concrete is close behind; bare concrete and dark stamped concrete are the hottest. Color matters more than material.
Can you put pavers over my existing concrete?
Thin overlay pavers, yes, on a sound level slab — a common pool-deck upgrade. Standard pavers need their own base.
Do pavers hold up under an RV?
Only with a thick concrete-stabilized base; most RV pads in Surprise are six-inch concrete for that reason.
Do you install pavers?
We're a concrete contractor; for pavers we'll refer you to an installer we trust, and we'll pour the concrete base or curbing they need.
What lasts longer?
Built right, both last 30 years. Concrete on a bad base cracks; pavers on a bad base settle. The base is the whole story.
