How much does a pool deck coating cost in Arizona?

2026 prices for recoating a faded Kool Deck, coating a new deck, and the overlays in between — and which system stays coolest, lasts longest and looks right.

Cool-deck acrylic coating being applied to a pool deck

The short answer

In Surprise in 2026, recoating an existing pool deck with a textured acrylic cool-deck system costs $4 to $7 per square foot — $2,800 to $4,500 for a typical 600-square-foot deck — including prep, crack repair, two coats and a UV sealer. Heavy repair of spalling or delaminated Kool Deck adds $1 to $3 per square foot where needed. Coating a new deck with the pour is $3.50 to $6. A decorative overlay (stamped or troweled) is $9 to $15. A reseal alone, every three to five years, is $1 to $1.75.

Which system

Textured acrylic (knockdown / splatter). The standard recoat — sprayed texture, light colors, cool underfoot, slip-resistant, 8 to 12 years. Goes over old Kool Deck and bare concrete.

Classic Kool Deck. The cement-based topping troweled into fresh concrete on 1980s–90s pools; only for new pours, and less common now. Recoats go over it.

Overlays. Polymer-cement overlays stamped or troweled in flagstone and slate patterns — the premium look, 10 to 15 years, hotter than light acrylic unless the color is light.

Epoxy and polyaspartic. Garage-floor systems; too hot and too slick for a pool deck. We don't use them there.

What moves the price

The condition of what's there (loose coating has to come off), the amount of crack and spall repair, the texture and number of colors, borders and patterns, and access. A deck with a settled section needs leveling before any coating — a coating over a moving slab fails.

Heat

Light-colored textured acrylic runs 20 to 30 degrees cooler than bare gray concrete in direct sun — the difference between barefoot and not. Dark colors give most of that back. Ask for the sample board in the afternoon sun before you choose.

Common questions

Can you recoat over my old Kool Deck?

Yes, if it's bonded. We grind off loose areas, patch, and coat over the rest. A deck that's mostly delaminated gets fully ground and coated as new.

How long does a recoat last?

Eight to 12 years with a reseal every three to five. Furniture pads and balanced pool chemistry at the edge extend it.

How long is the deck out of service?

Two to three days of work, walkable in 24 hours, furniture back in three.

Is it slippery?

The texture is chosen for wet slip resistance — that's why knockdown and splatter finishes are standard around pools.

Should I just replace the deck?

Only if it's settled, heaved or crumbling through. A sound deck with an ugly surface is a recoat, at a third the cost.
