Cool deck and pool deck coatings for Surprise backyards
A bare concrete deck hits 150 degrees in a Surprise July. A textured acrylic coating knocks 20 to 30 degrees off it, covers the cracks and stains, and turns a 1990s deck back into somewhere you'd walk barefoot.
Half the pool decks in Surprise have a coating on them — the original Kool Deck troweled on when the pool was built, or an acrylic spray texture put on later — and most of them are past their lives: faded, chalking, peeling at the edges, chipped where chairs drag, hot where the coating's worn through to the concrete. Recoating is the fix, and it's a fraction of the cost of tearing the deck out. The concrete underneath is usually fine; the surface just needs to be prepped, repaired and recoated with a product made for the Arizona sun.
Our process: pressure-wash and acid-etch or grind to a sound surface; fill cracks and spalling with polymer patch; apply a bond coat, then a textured acrylic cool-deck system in the color and texture you choose — knockdown, splatter, or the classic Kool Deck look — and seal it with a UV-stable topcoat. Two to three days, walkable in 24 hours, poolside furniture back in three. It's cooler underfoot, slip-resistant wet, and it makes the deck look new.

Questions we get about cool deck & coatings
What's the difference between Kool Deck and cool deck?
Kool Deck is a brand — a cement-based topping troweled into fresh concrete, common on 1980s–90s pools. 'Cool deck' has become the generic term for any textured, heat-reducing coating. Most recoats today use acrylic systems that go over either.
Can you coat over my old Kool Deck?
Yes, if it's sound. Loose or delaminated areas are ground off and patched first; the acrylic bonds to what remains.
How much cooler is it really?
Textured, light-colored acrylic runs 20 to 30 degrees cooler than bare gray concrete in direct sun — the difference between walking barefoot and not.
How long does a coating last?
Eight to 12 years with a reseal every three to five. Furniture pads and keeping the pool chemistry balanced at the deck edge extend it.
Is it slippery when wet?
The texture is chosen for slip resistance; knockdown and splatter finishes are the standard around pools for that reason.
What if the concrete underneath is cracked?
Hairline cracks are patched and coated over. Cracks that move or steps in the slab need repair or leveling first — see our repair page.
